Does Higher Volatility Mean Higher RTP? Our 394-Pokie Study Says Nah
We tested the common yarn that high-volatility pokies have better RTPs. Our analysis of 394 games reveals the fair dinkum truth about volatility and returns.
The Common Myth
Many players believe that high-volatility slots compensate for their infrequent payouts with higher RTPs. The logic seems sound: if a game pays less often, it should pay more overall. But is this actually true?
We tested this hypothesis using our complete database of 394 slots with verified RTP data across multiple volatility levels.
The Data
| Volatility Level | Games | Average RTP | Range |
|-----------------|-------|-------------|-------|
| Low | 11 | 95.75% | 94.00%–97.40% |
| Medium | 149 | 96.05% | 94.00%–97.40% |
| High | 118 | 96.03% | 95.67%–97.03% |
| Very High | 116 | 96.50% | 96.00%–96.77% |
The Surprising Results
Finding #1: Very High Volatility DOES Correlate with Higher RTP
Games marked as "very high" volatility average 96.50% — nearly half a percentage point above medium-volatility games. However, this finding comes with a caveat: 108 of the 116 very-high-volatility games are from Pragmatic Play, which maintains a 96%+ floor across their entire catalog regardless of volatility.
Finding #2: Low Volatility Has the LOWEST Average RTP
The 11 low-volatility games average just 95.75%. This is the lowest category — but the sample is small and heavily influenced by Novomatic's older classics (which tend to be low-volatility AND lower-RTP).
Finding #3: Medium and High Are Nearly Identical
Medium (96.05%) and High (96.03%) volatility games are separated by just 0.02 percentage points — statistically meaningless. This demolishes the myth that higher volatility automatically means higher returns.
Finding #4: The Range Tells a Different Story
- Low volatility range: 3.40 percentage points (94.00%–97.40%)
- Very high volatility range: 0.77 percentage points (96.00%–96.77%)
High-volatility games have a much tighter RTP range. This isn't because they're designed to have better RTPs — it's because most come from modern providers who standardize above 96%.
The Real Explanation
The correlation between very-high volatility and higher RTP isn't causal — it's provider-driven. Modern providers (Pragmatic Play, Push Gaming) tend to make both high-volatility games AND maintain high RTP floors. Older providers (Novomatic) tend to make lower-volatility games AND have lower RTPs.
Choose your slot based on your play style, not a hoped-for RTP advantage. Volatility doesn't meaningfully predict RTP.The Best of Both Worlds
If you want both high RTP AND specific volatility preferences:
High RTP + Low Volatility:- Mystery Joker (Play'n GO) — 96.98%, Low volatility
- Dolphin's Pearl Deluxe (Novomatic) — 97.40%, Medium volatility
- Wild Swarm (Push Gaming) — 97.03%, Very High volatility
- Razor Shark (Push Gaming) — 96.70%, Very High volatility
- Mystery Joker 6000 (Play'n GO) — 96.97%, High volatility
