We measured RTP across 566 demo games: here is the real distribution
The median RTP in our catalog is 96.43%, but only 10% of games clear 97%. A data breakdown of 566 free demo titles — by game type, by spread, and what the numbers mean for players.
Most RTP articles quote the same handful of famous high-payout slots. That tells you what
the ceiling looks like, not what you will actually meet. So we took our own catalog — 566
demo games, every one of them playable free on this site — and looked at the whole
distribution.
All figures below are the RTP values published by the game studios, recorded in our
database on 18 September 2026. They are theoretical long-run percentages, not measurements
of our own.
The headline numbers
- Average RTP: 96.07%
- Median RTP: 96.43%
- Range: 92.04% to 99.35%
- Games at or above 97%: 57 of 566 (10%)
- Games below 96%: 143 of 566 (25%)
The gap between the average and the median is the first thing worth noticing. The median
sits higher, which means the bottom of the range is dragging the average down: a tail of
low-RTP titles pulls harder than the high-RTP tail pushes.
In practice, a "96.5% slot" is not a good deal — it is the middle of the market. 55% of our
catalog sits below 96.5%, and 45% at or above it. If you have been treating 96.5% as a
quality threshold, you have been treating the median as an achievement.
Where the real spread is: game type
Averaging everything together hides the most useful pattern in the data.
| Category | Games | Average RTP |
|---|---|---|
| Blackjack | 24 | 97.94% |
| Poker | 18 | 97.63% |
| Roulette | 21 | 96.80% |
| Slots | 498 | 95.90% |
| Bingo | 5 | 94.91% |
Table games pay back more than slots, and the difference is not marginal: the blackjack
titles in our catalog average two full percentage points above the slots. That is the
single largest structural effect in the whole dataset — larger than the difference between
any two slot studios.
There is a reason. Blackjack and video poker RTP figures assume correct play; the house
edge is built on a known, optimal strategy. Slot RTP assumes nothing at all, because there
is nothing to decide. If you are optimising purely for theoretical return, the category
choice matters more than the title choice.
The 97% club is small
Fifty-seven games in 566 reach 97% or better, and the composition of that group is
instructive: it is heavily weighted towards blackjack and video poker variants, plus a
small number of slots from studios that deliberately publish high-RTP configurations.
The single highest figure in our catalog is 99.35%. The lowest is 92.04%. That is a spread
of more than seven percentage points — on a 100-unit stake, the difference between keeping
99 and keeping 92 over the long run.
What this does not tell you
Three honest caveats, because RTP articles usually skip them.
RTP is a long-run figure. It describes millions of rounds. In a session of a fewhundred spins, the realistic outcomes cluster far away from it in both directions.
Volatility decides how that return arrives. Two games at 96.5% can feel completelydifferent: one pays small amounts often, the other pays almost nothing for long stretches
and then resolves in a single large round. Our catalog splits 219 medium, 172 high, 127
very high and 48 low — so most games you meet are in the middle, but the high and very high
group together outnumber them.
Published RTP can vary by configuration. Some studios ship several RTP versions of thesame game and the operator chooses. The figure we record is the one published for the demo
build on this site.
How to use this
If you want the best theoretical return, look at table games first. If you want slots,
treat 96.5% as the midpoint rather than the goal, and read the volatility label before the
RTP — it will tell you more about your session than the third decimal place of a percentage
will.
You can check any figure yourself: every game page on this site shows its RTP, its rank
within these 566 titles, and how it compares with its studio's other games. Start with the
RTP database or the high RTP collection.Related Articles
